Flash or long shutter time?

Which is best; built-in flash (crappy one at Nikon N50) or just do a long shutter time with tripod? :? I'm looking to take som christmas picture here...

do a long shutter with a small aperature, that way you get great detail, and great depth of field on shots... the built in flashes arent very good cuz they dont have much of a distance thats good

The answer all depends on what you are trying to do.
One of the fun parts of photography is having an idea and then having to inventively problem solve to get it on film. There are no real right or wrong ways - just easier ways. But if it gets you what you want, then it's right for you.
Built in flash can work to advantage if you use it with available light - it doesn't have to be either/or.
Play around, have fun and always be prepared to chuck it and chance it ;-)
