Flash question

any specific off brand you can think of?

I only know of like sigma and tamron... and I know they make lenses, but not sure what else...

Have you ever been to B&H Photo's site? If not....

www.bhphotovideo.com

you should really spend some time browsing around their camera and photo gear section. For now...here's a link to the flash sync cables.
Dedicated Cords & Modules

Very first one is a 30 dollar cable for Canon that retains TTL.

I normally use adorama for my stuff, but I did check out the link you posted for b&h...

That first cord that is $29.99 would be all I need right?

Gary, what is the thing you linked to? And I'm really going to soudn like a noob now... What in the world is a sync socket? is that the hole that looks like a headphone jack? If it is, I use that for my remote shutter release that I got...

Yes, that $30 cable should be all you need (and the flash of course) to get it off camera.

That's the port for PC cable.

I feel dumb. Which one is the port for pc cable? The thing Gary linked to? Or the first thing on the page the othe person linked me to at b&h?

And what exactly does port for pc cable mean and do?

.....In other words, can I hold the flash in my
hand next to the camera or something other than it being mounted directly on the camera?
You mean, like this?

:D Sorry, couldn't help myself. Only read a few of the posts, but yep, a sync cord or wireless triggers.

 that was me about 20mins ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Except my flowers were cooler and I had a fisheye on.

No flowers around here yet. It is snowing right now.
I bought a remote trigger and receiver for $25 and it works great. You can also add receivers later.

You just put the little transmitter on your camera and put your external flash on the receiver, turn everything on and shoot.
I got a used flash from my local camera store for $10. It was an old Vivatar and had no manual controls so it shoots at full power always but it is a good set up to get started on.
