Are there any nikon flashes that will work with D 40x aside from sb 400,600,800 also any good third party units . would like to gere all advice and opinons

Do you want TTL? if you do, than all you've got are the (excelent) SB-400,600,800's.

I have not looked, nor would I want to use anything besides Nikon flashes for myself... but I *think* that with Sigma flashes you could use TTL... do the research and check it out for yourself:
