I am out to get a proper flash unit for my camera, rather than relying on the popup flash all the time. I do intend to also use it for macro work as I simply don't have enough to get a proper macro flash unit as well.
So far I think the following would suit, but has anyone any experiences or advice?

flash unit
Canon 580EX II Speedlite - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-580EX...2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1214504501&sr=8-2Diffuser
STOFEN OM-EY - http://www.amazon.co.uk/STOFEN-OM-E...?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1214504501&sr=8-11
LumiQuest Softbox - http://www.amazon.co.uk/LumiQuest-l...2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1214504580&sr=1-2
this appears to be a popular choice for people who use their larger flash unit for macro work

Any thoughts or comments - thanks!

Depends entirely on how macro. Remember to a fly a bear flash head will look like a softbox. Actually having a softbox will make it look like a heavily clouded day with no shadow at all.

Depth of Field is minimal at macro distances. Thus a wide-open aperture is very little different from fully stopped down. Use your camera wide open and just use an LED ringlight. Don't "buy" and LED ringlight - they're simple enough to make and will cost next to nothing.
