It's not an actual video of people asking for free photo's. It's an excerpt from Dreams with Sharp Teeth, a documentary about writer Harlan Ellison. It's related because he's talking about companies asking for his work for free because other people are giving them their work for free. It's kind of old, so I'm sure a lot have seen it, but I'm sure some haven't. just funny and interesting.

Edit: The documentary is on Netflix streaming by the way if anyone is interested.

I'll send this link in reply if I get asked for my shots for free :)
I'm not a pro, but I was asked a couple of times to "donate" a shot, for a commercial proposition no less, ie someone was planning to use a shot in a production their company would sell en masse, and they actually acted like I should be grateful for it. I don't make my living with photography, but I still told them to piss off. I imagine for the pros it should be really annoying.

I've fallen afoul to this :-(
I was emailed to ask if a company could use some of my Walt Disney World photos in a "free" guide to Florida. I said yes and it turns out that guide was not free :-(

Thanks for the link. Too funny. And sadly, very true.

I used to sell articles, doing both the writing and photography, to magazines and made decent money with it until there were so many people just happy seeing their name in print that it became close to impossible to sell anything :grumpy:

Major magazines, making tons of money, acted as described by Ellison as if they were doing you a favor by publishing your work for no pay. So I got out of the business.

Yep from local companies to even the European branch Ad Agency for nikon pan-euro wanted to use one of my images on their site flickr thread discussion here. I inquired about payment. And they responded well it was just a web based slide show and one of my images would be in an online slide show for 2 yrs. and they weren't intending to pay. But would go a full 25€. I considered that a slap in the face. The new Euro Ad agency for Nikon not paying for works.

Also seems to many sites that generate income for their site. And steal images from flickr even tho the images indicated are not for making monies off them even tho they are Creative Commons. One Webdesigner site was doing a two-part on How to Sell Stock photography and used my Tack Sharp image. And used one of mine without contact or permission or renumeration. Speak of the Irony.

Yep if a site is doing public works or non-profit would easily consider to donate right to use license to them. But to have a company like Wired Magazine use one of my images on their site really pisses me off. Even tho my love for the Nook e-reader I allowed it to slide this time.

But the problem is short of removing your images off the internet. As to chase after the offender is too complex and costly beyond serving them a desist notice. Welcome to the New World Order where everything on the Internets is Free! for the dishonest.
