Floral photography

Is possible to shoot nice pictures with flowers using the Nikon 50mm f/1.8D lens? I know the minimum focus distance is 0.45m but I don't need macro 1:1, a simple close-up is enough for me. Now I don't want to buy extension tube.

I like shooting flowers with my 50mm/1.8 but you have to step back from the subject. I think it works best when shooting groups of flowers so you can get some in focus and some in the background out of focus. It also works well on foliage and berries.
