If you forget your tripod, use like a wall to stabilize the camera or a table, a pillar, whatever is available and you can usually get it _fairly_ steady. Albiet not as good as a tripod (obviously).

I've gone to Florence twice and it really let me remember some monuments thx. Very nice photos. I wont forget my tripod to Venice
