Focus Breathing, is this really an issue?

With some zoom lenses focus 'breathing' is pretty dramatic.

Nikon's AF-S 18-200 mm superzoom comes immediately to mind as a prime example.
When used close to it's near focus limit and zoomed to 200 mm, the magnification is only about 135 mm worth.

Just like shooting a rifle.

I don't know what KR thinks it is, but focus breathing is an issue when pulling focus in motion pictures. It's why motion picture lenses are designed not to 'breathe' - ie change the angle of view as the focus is changed, and it applies to prime lenses as well as zooms. To counteract breathing the lens needs to shorten its focal length slightly as you focus closer. What does KR mean? Air wheezing in and out? Maybe it is just his little joke, as is most of his site.

Shooting a rifle and more so a handgun breathing technique is critical to accuracy. If I shoot my Kahr CW4543 45 cal Semi auto with a 3.64inch barrel with conventional riffling,I could plink 4 X 6 inch steel plates consistently at 75 yrds..If my breathing technique suffers I could miss it consistently at 50 yards or less.Breathing techniques is applied to just about everything.Target shooting,Martial arts,Sports or weight training and so on. Why not photography be any less important, unless a tripod is used then breathing technique goes out the window.

I've noticed it, but I always allow myself a bit of room for cropping anyway, so it's not something I ever pay real attention to.

Focus breathing can become an issue when focus stacking. Some software can account for it, but not all.

Not that kind of "Focus breathing!" lol!

lens - Is it normal for focal length to change while focusing? - Photography

That's a funny thread. 'DragonLord' is full of it and Stan Rogers is spot on.

Don't worry about it! I shoot handheld a lot (even Macro), so I am a proponent of good "Focus" Breathing techniques... just like the ones I use for knocking down rams at 200 meters with my Super Blackhawk!
