Focusing in lowlight for LE?

Ok so what is the best trick for getting sharp photos in almost dark? I've tried doing it manually but since I C.S.S. through the viewfinder I end up with blurry exposures. The auto setting just buzzes and never stops trying to focus.

Any hints?

I feel that goes without saying... I am talking about when there is very little visible light source. For example moonlit scenes, or similar landscapes at near dark.

You need an area of contrast for autofocus to work. You may need to light it up yourself with a flashlight or laser or something to get the initial focus, then shut off AF and don't mess with it while getting the actual shot(s).

Give us a scenario you're having trouble with, and maybe we can give more specific techniques that will work for you.

I personally de-couple my shutter from my focus, and use "AF-ON" as my single focus button.
That way, you won't re-engage the focus motor when you press the shutter.

30seconds is a long time for things to move.

If you want to photograph stars, you will need to shorten your exposure, and choose a sharp range of your lens.

Focus set at infinity ∞.

You're quite a distance from the things at ground-level. Too far to illuminate maybe. Try stopping-down the lens more than you would otherwise. For subjects a bit closer, I've used a Petzl. ULTRA | Petzl
