FOCUSING ISSUES

Hi everyone! I'm having some issues on focusing! I hate that many of my pictures comes like this one. Blurry on his face !! lately I have been using the auto focus to avoid it. Please be honest, does it look that bad to you guys? (Using Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor )

I'm viewing on my cell but it seems like the hand is sharp. Make sure you choose the af point to where you want to focus ( or focus and recompose). Or make sure you have adequate depth of field.

Looks like it might be not enough depth of field because the grass near his elbows starts to go out of focus. You probably need to get the camera set to have his hands and face all in focus.

I'd thing about the framing too so his fingers and end of the tie are in the picture, it seems framed a little high since there's space above his head and to the sides but not enough in the foreground. It probably would have helped to bring your camera down a little or get yourself in a lower position. The expression is great, makes me want to smile with him.

what was your Shutter speed and Aperture setting ?
How were you selecting focus points? Manually or letting the camera do everything for you ?

It's a very small, low-resolution, 88k file, so it's tough to critically evaluate the exact depth of field, but in a general sense, at this close a distance, with a 50mm lens, there is not "all that much in-focus" at wider apertures. At close distances, depth of field is very limited, and it requires SMALL apertures, like f/11, to get much in-focus. As the camera to subject distance grows longer and longer, it's possible to use apertures like f/5.6 and still hold enough in-focus on shots like this.

It doesn't look bad to me.
It looks under exposed and a little post process editing will spruce it up.

What camera are you using and what AF mode, AF priority mode, and AF focus area mode do you usually use?
Are you familiar with how to control depth-of-field (DoF) and how DoF relates to focus?
What light metering mode do you use to shoot the boy?
