So I now have 3 prime lenses in my bag a 55, 105 and 200mm. It seems as though my bag needs a wide angle lens for general use. Which would be a better general purpose lens, the 28mm or the 35mm? Maybe even a little wider say 24mm? I am going to be using it on a NEX so the smaller sensor is going to change that correct?

Thanks!
Greg

Lens selection has EVERYTHING to do with your shooting style and your artistic approach, shoot what feels good to you. You can't ask people what your style is, it's personal, it's yours.

Hey!

That makes sense, however I have only just started taking pictures within the last week. (new camera and "new" used lenses) At least taking them with a goal and a specific end result in mind. So I am still developing my inner artist. Not having a lens that will offer more options is going to limit me for sure.

I would personally choose the 28mm over the 35mm.

On a NEX the 28mm = 42mm, 35mm = 52mm, 55mm = 80mm ... APS-C vs Full Frame

... thinking about this some more ... I would jump down to a 20mm (=30mm).

I walk around with a 35 on APS-C most of the time, but I do want a 24 eventually to complement it. It is really a personal style decision more than anything, as mentioned. I had a 28 that I sold because I didn't like the quality, but it was still nice FOV to shoot with. You should go to a camera shop and play with a couple, see what you think.

Correct. 28mm will extend your current lens set better than a 35. If you can choose any mount via an adaptor... two 28mm suggestions... either Zeiss Distagon 2.8/28 or Konica Hexanon AR 3.5/28.

..or Pentacon 3.5/30 (Meyer Lydith) also very nice lens. M42 mount. 10 blade iris.

Thank you! That helps a lot!

The Konica Hexanon AR series, how would you compare the optics with the Nikkor Ai-s lenses? The Konica are much cheaper on eBay and there are many available.

I find the 28 a little awkward, it's not quite normal, but then it's not quite wide. I end up with distortion that I don't notice in the field because it's too subtle. I prefer 35mm, myself and if I had a choice, I'd have a 23mm and 35mm in my kit.

Excellent. The Hexanon ARs. The Hexar AR were not as rated.

The biggest plus of the Konica SLR system is the outstanding quality of the Konica Hexanon lenses. The image quality of these lenses is mostly absolutely first-class, they don't fall back behind more prestigeous competitors like the Nikkors. Even 20 years after production of Hexanon lenses for the Konica bayonet ceased, many expensive, modern, and computer-aided design lens has difficulties to keep up to the image quality of these veterans. During their production period, the Konica Hexanon lenses have been the standard of the Japanese Industry Ministry, used to judge the quality of produced lenses from other manufacturers.

Thanks for all the help guys... I must say with all the lenses out there and the different cameras used in combination with those lenses makes it really hard to distinguish how the images compare. With that said I have been searching multiple forum posts, DP reviews, flicker and other sources to view images. To me these lenses seem a bit soft. Do you guys have any sample I could view? :-)
