For pros or with pro cameras your inexpensive point-n-shoot digital camera of choice?

I've come to rely almost 100% on my iPhone for quick photography/ videos and have become very accustomed to it. Aside from an iPhone or other smartphones which small digital camera do you carry apart from your pro full SLR cameras?

I know quite a few photographers who have full DSLR setups who are now using the mirrorless setups for their "small camera" since it gives them a DSLR like experience and setup, but without all the bulk and size of a DSLR. Indeed some of the mirrorless cameras can have a very good set of features (the Olympus OMD for example).

In addition to my Nikon gear, I have both an LX5 and a GF1/GH1 with several lenses.

I find the u43 gets used when I want to "take a real camera" somewhere... the Nikon bag is so big and heavy and I'm tired of lugging it all around.

I find the LX5 gets used when I think "oh yeah, grab a camera" on the way out the door.

I find the Nikon still rules in the studio, but only because I still have it. I could pretty much live without it most of the time now. That said, I'm still contemplating a D800 body, since I have all FF lenses for the Nikon (started out my Nikon days w/ a D1 and a F100 film body).

I'm quite happy with my Canon G12, and was happy with my G10 prior to that.

I've toyed with the idea of the G1X or the G15, but the G12 is still gettin' the job done for me. The biggest turn-off about the G15 for me is that they did away with the articulating screen. I don't care about that on my DSLR's, but I like it on a point & shoot...

The Canon S series has been my compact of choice for the past few years. First the s90, then s95, and now s100. It fits in the front pocket of my blue jeans so I can carry it anywhere, and I shoot in RAW so the low light, indoor, evening photos I take when I'm carrying it at various events and parties clean up great in Lightroom.

The challenges I have with mirrorless and/or larger compacts are that 1) I'll still end up spending money on lenses (specifically with a mirrorless body of course), and 2) they don't fit in my pocket so I'd still have some sort of bag that I would need to carry around. As I look through the thousands of pictures I have from my S series compacts, the majority of those pictures were ONLY obtained because the S series was in my pocket in situations where I would be have been highly unlikely to have been carrying a camera bag. Of course you could argue that you always have a camera phone with you anyway, but IQ isn't remotely close to what you can achieve after some mild post-processing of a RAW image from an S series.

Here's an example of what an S100 can do in low light. A camera phone picture wouldn't look nearly this good, and had I had a larger P&S like a G series or even a mirrorless, I would have been much less likely to have been carrying it at this concert.

So....if I need a camera to carry in a pocket, I grab the S100. If I want or need more capabilities and want to carry a bag, I grab the 5D3. I personally have a hard time justifying anything in between, as I'm not sure what scenarios I'd actually use it for.

I just sold my wifes G10 and bought the G15, what a world of difference.
Its a great all around camera with very fast high quality lens and the camera takes very good low light pictures.
I think its the best camera you can get for under 400$

Are those the primary differences, or are there other things you like about the G15?

The other question would be where are you finding it for under $400.00?

If buying a P&S, I'd go for one that can easily be put into a pocket, Sony RX1 would be my first choice, though if budget doesn't allow I'd buy a Sony RX100 or a Fujifilm X100.
