Here it is...finally the first bloom of my oldest favorite clematis that i thought was a gone for good...and it has a whole lot more blooms pending........View attachment 267499

Jackmanii! I read that if you dead head it will bloom again early fall. I’m experimenting this year to see if this works.

thank you for this information.. one thing i noticed was the flowers and buds are a smaller version of what they once were.. this may or may not improve.. because this is the for the most part a new plant from the older plant.. the original older plant had huge size blooms.. for years.. but at least i am getting this much...lol it may just need some plant food which i will give..just looked them up they want a hefty price.. maybe start from seeds...

Oh check that parsley over the next few weeks for tiny swallowtails!!! First sign was about a week after we saw the butterfly in the garden. Looked like some specks of dirt on the leaves that disappeared. About 3 weeks after seeing her they started to show themselves.

Okay - about a week, then? There was no doubt about how often she was landing, and I have two of these parsley plants side by side on a cart. So now both could be hosting the little buggers.

I'll be looking out for the "specks of dirt" then - and sadly will have to buy parsley at the store for the foreseeable future. If I can find yet another plant for sale, I'll be keeping it in the sun room!

We plant up a few pots intended for the next generations and cover the rest for us. Seems to work.

I wish I had covered my plants after spotting the cats. Lost so many to wasps (witnessed that yuck) and probably birds. I ordered some of the butterfly net enclosures but by the time they arrived there was only 1 cat left on the parsley and the fennel had so much lady bug larvae on it that I would have just been trapping them in with their assailants.

It's an insect planet. They'll get by. Suspect our well-meant efforts likely mimic nature insofar as some make it, most don't. Many gardeners in my 'hood foster milkweed for the Monarchs. Does it help? Maybe. I'm partial to the big blue solitary wasps who dig our sage flowers. They're rarities and have some scary child-rearing methods but they're not aggressive and do go for some obnoxious crawlies. I do worry about bees whose partnership with us hasn't been evenly beneficial.

On all this, have a look sometime at Laline Paull, "The Bees." Fantasy fiction that dispels any doubt about the complexity of social insects' lives. Fun summer reading for gardeners.

Indoor plants anyone? Check out these huge plants I got today at Costco for $20 each. These would easily be $40-$50 at HD and even more at the garden center.

My picks - cat palm and umbrella plant.

Love it. Even the cheap plastic pot doesn’t look terrible. Will have to keep an eye out for some nice ceramic pots.
