My Cardinal flower yesterday, before the big storms rolled through:

It's just starting to completely open. Amazing deep color. I watched a hummingbird going from flower to flower, ignoring the feeder 3 feet away. Definitely Hummer magnets!

This morning there was an entire stalk on the ground. I was hoping to stake it but it had been ripped from the ground. So, it's a 2-stalk plant now, and I'm going to get small stakes for it.

It’s gorgeous. I haven’t seen our resident hummingbird at ours but that is probably because it’s not in view from my favorite seat on the deck

I did have to tie it to the lattice fence that it’s in front of to keep it from flopping. Not sure if I mentioned before but the stalk that got the bloom nibbled off by the slugs or earwigs ended up shooting out 7-8 smaller blooms off of that stalk. I’ll be pinching this one next year.

Oh check that parsley over the next few weeks for tiny swallowtails!!! First sign was about a week after we saw the butterfly in the garden. Looked like some specks of dirt on the leaves that disappeared. About 3 weeks after seeing her they started to show themselves.

Okay, I had to go back to this post to find your picture of the swallowtail cat, @SquarePeg !

I stepped out to snip some oregano earlier, and thought I'd check the two parsley plants.

Here they are! Look dead center:

In fact, this particular plant is just covered with them:

The other plant is a bit spindly, but he has company, too - I think there's one hiding at the top as well as this obvious one on the stalk:

And, the cats on this spindly plant are easily twice the size as the others. They've definitely been there longer.

I'm beyond tickled. Hope they all make it!

Try some bronze fennel and dill next season, too. Just keep the pantry stocked!

I had to wait until after the fence was replaced to start on my master garden plan. This is the start, but eventually I will put a mulch or rock border along the fence (about five feet out). I have to figure out how to keep weeds from growing in the mulch/rocks without using herbicides, but that is probably not possible, just a lot of hand weeding anytime something pops up. All plants will be in containers, because the black gumbo clay soil here is awful for growing most plants. The box has the cone flowers, pentas (recovering from the horn worm carnage), and vincas. The half barrel is my memorial for Daniel, and has lantanas and vincas in it. The last pot is a Korean mulberry. I won't let it grow in-ground, because they are invasive around here, and a mess to deal with, so the pot will help contain it. If I go with mulch edging, I have to decide on shredded bark or rubber. Shredded bark is preferrable, and most cost effective.

A couple of the clematis that were heavily damaged by pests have recovered and are flowering!

This one is called Warsaw Nike and was planted last fall. It was about 2-3’ high on the trellis and covered in buds when the bunnies chewed the stem off at the base. I was devastated. So happy it’s growing.

This one is Dr Ruppel. It was a tiny $5 bare root plant I bought at Job Lot and I was not expecting any blooms this year. It’s in a medium sized pot. The original shoot was destroyed by earwigs but I put it up on a plant stand and it took off with multiple stems.
