Practice with new Nikon...

watch your BGs. There's a line coming directly out of its mouth which is a little distracting. Also, the exposure on teh gargoyle is a little under where the exposure in the bg looks good, this is taking focus away from your intended subject.

Gargoyle was in shadow and tower on sun. What can I do to get him better? Is only thing to wait for sun to get on other side so both objects would be on sun?

There are a couple of options; you could have spot-metered the gargoyle (which would have over-exposed your background), you could have used your flash to add more foreground ("fill") light, or waited for a better time of day. There's some excellent reading here on exposure and how your camera's meter "decides" what exposure to use, as well as many other aspects of photography.
