I'm guessing it has very nice DOF and the exposure looks good.

As a rule, try and avoid macro subjects with so much depth. The DoF in close-up/macro work is very shallow, and not ideally suited to objects with significant depth. It's a very interesting shot, but suffers from the physical limitations of the equipment.
