What's new

Get a grip.

make sure you get a nice off bround grip. Just imagine the horror of the grip coming off at either ends while on a tripod or one of those fancy straps that screw into the tripod mount.

They all just screw into the tripod thread in the camera. There's no other mechanical connections between the body & grip.

I have a the Canon BG-E7 on my 7D, and love it. I don't like to take chances with 3rd party accessories most of the time, and Amazon had it on sale for $120 last year. At that price, it's very well worth it IMHO. I think the Pros and Cons have been pretty well covered already, so I don't have much to add. I can say that I do occasionally take mine off, but it's generally went I'm pairing down to carry just the camera for a field trip with a kid's class or something. I also don't have an L-bracket for it yet, so I have to take it off to use my tripod.

Same as Ronron.

Have a 3rd party on the 60d. Works, but feels cheap compared to the camera. Have OEM on 7dII and it simply feels like it belongs. Personal choice now, but I will always get OEM grips and batteries from now on.

This thread inspired me to buy a grip as well for my d7100.

I think he's talking about 3rd party grip issues.
I recall reading about the dial that you rotate to thread into the body getting stripped, and thus unable to take the grip off.
Also of stories of the grips bottom thread into a small metal piece which broke off in tripods, versus and OEM's larger metal carrier.

Fun 3rd party stories ...

something like that I dont see why I'd pay 7-8x the cost.

With a body that cost me $1000, and lenses that cost $900, $1300, etc... mounted on the front, I don't want to worry about quality when the grip attachment to the camera and to the tripod plate is all that is keeping it all from tumbling down to the ground. I used my last camera body for 7 years, so I figure the cost in the long run isn't that bad. I didn't want to worry about whether the buttons would fail, or if the camera would read the batteries properly, or whether it would hold up over time. But I'm more of a buy-it-once kind of guy.
