I've seen earlier versions of this some time ago. I suppose it helps stabilizing the camera, but there's no way I'd us one now.

When I was a dispatcher (early-mid 80s), I had a call for person with a gun that turned out to be a guy with a shovel, collecting dirt. I can't imagine walking around with this.

I get enough looks going into the woods dressed in camo with my Think Tank belt system loaded with lenses and gear. This also reminds me of a similar Soviet made camera that was outfitted with the butt-end of a rifle for stability. I've seen a few videos of vintage camera guys getting asked a LOT of questions when they take them out and about.
