You're only lacking one thing to getting the shots you want. Your equipment is more than adequate for what you want to do. The only thing you are missing is a bit of knowledge.

- at least twice the inverse of the focal length of the lens (50mm lens, > 1/50)
- if possible, stop down your lens to get more sharpness
- use a tripod
- mirror lockup / timer
