Managed to start doing some more work with the flash trying to get better at the exposures. I have one SB600 and the built in. In this image there are two low hung halogens just above and in front. Flash is off to stage left with the defuser down.

What do you think?

Not sure if the awkward lighting and shadowing on the neck is caused by the halogens or the flash, either way it stands out immediately to me

I think that is the flash. Really it needs to be softer. I tried another flash angle and it is worse as it caused harsh lines from his nose as well.

The harsh lines are caused by the light being small.

Making the light apparently larger with an umbrella or a diffusion panel makes the shadow edges much softer.

Thanks, I don't have anything at this point to make the light bigger, I have thought of making up a softbox but just haven't had time.

It kinda drives me nuts a I know exactly what I need to do as I light all the time but in the virtual world. Funny because if you want to learn lighting in CG we go to the photography sites and then transpose that into CG tools.
