#2 is great. Have you thought of cropping in a little from both sides? I find the people on the far right draw my eye away from the beautiful contrast between the blurry and sharp people at the center.

Like the image, I have one from a few years ago at Winchester cathedral a que of ghost of people saint to get in the Christmas market.
Here in the UK back in the days of film and flash bulbs, police photographers found the they got some strange effects
That were like this. I set out to recreate a ghost person.
I have an image of me in an archway fading from the middle down to nothing.
A canon 1100d, two torches, a remote trigger, ... no I can’t post image.

Don’t ask why I started thinking about this as I went to sleep
But I was reminded of an article in a photo mag.
Using a ND filter they showed how to use a long exposure to photograph buildings and not have the people walking past show up in the image. Because the exposure was long the people were not in the frame long enough to register

Nice pic. Just a thought ... go back there and give some people some glow sticks and keep the shutter open a half second or so longer to create some light trails along with those ghostly images. Maybe it won't look as good as I imagine, IDK.
