GIMP subforum?

If there already is a shortcut, it will show what it is (SHIFT+CTRL+E in my case). If there is no shortcut already assigned, it will say 'Disabled'. Click where it says disabled, then press the shortcut you want on your keyboard.

And if a shortcut is already assigned elsewhere, it will tell you and give you the option of reassigning it or choosing another shortcut.

Go to 'Edit' -> 'Keyboard Shortcuts'. That brings up a list of all possible actions you can do. Including running any plug-ins you have installed. Find the thing you want to do (you'll have to expand whatever category it's in), click it, then make a new shortcut for it.

And of course, there are tons of shortcuts preset. What I like is that the menus say what the keyboard shortcut is for each option, if there is one. New shortcuts you add show up there as well.

Yes the menus taught me the shortcuts I use, but customizing, wow that info is PRICELESS! Thanks for the tip!

So, can you apply a saved curves adjustment to multiple photos in a batch?

Dave- yes, when you are in curves, if you click the + next to the presets drop down, you can save the existing curves to use again later.

Josh- what was the last script you installed? Was it that Python xpro? LOL! The instructions said it would be under filters --> Generic -->xpro. It wasn't, so I assumed the install failed (that was like 3 weeks ago, right?). Just yesterday I realized that it has it's own menu. Honestly, it wasn't worth installing. The way I used gave much more control over the final image.

Isn't there a photoshop challenge subforum? Heck, I'd go for a GIMP challenge one... would still be a great way to toss ideas around and figure the program out.

Really excited to see this took off last night; does anyone know how many people we need to be on board to get this started? If any Mods are reading, please let us know :)

I second this - where can we appeal/apply for a sub forum?

I think it's more of a wait-it-out until a Mod stumbles across the post :)

I don't do a lot of in-depth editing, but GIMP is pretty much all I use.

If there were a sub-forum, I guess it would be in this forum:
Graphics Programs and Photo Gallery

There are no other sub-forums in there though (like Photoshop, Lightroom, Paint Shop Pro, etc...), so I don't really expect to see one for GIMP...

Flickr actually has a lot of good GIMP stuff too:
Flickr: GIMP users

*does not speak for the whole of the mod/admin team*
Just my viewpoint, but we do try and keep the number of sections we have on the site to a decent number and since we don't really have dedicated subsections for the other editing programs I can't see a strong need for a GIMP dedicated section. If we did make one we'd also need a photoshop, Paint Shop Pro and probably one or two others added as well - so its not just a case of adding the one section.

If GIMP users want to you can certainly write some good threads on the use of GIMP itself (within the editing general subsection). If you made up a list of suitable threads a GIMP FAQ/Guide thread could be made and stickied in that section for reference.

Thanks, Overread! Totally understand the idea of keeping everything streamlined. Actually, that's why this is my favorite photography forum. The problem with too many subforums: not enough traffic and you're better off posting in a general forum.

I think that an FAQ sticky would be great! We'll have to put our heads together and see what we can come up with.

I have been saving some curves, but with 100 or so photos to open, apply, and save each one, it is pretty slow. I was hoping there would be away to apply a saved curve over all the photos at once.

I'm +1 for a GIMP sub forum.

Ooooh you mean like batch editing? Uuuugh, I think there is a way, but you'd be better off asking Sparky or Josh.

Yeah. Thanks hopefully they'll see this. It probably can be done with scripts but that stuff is Greek to me.

I hear ya! I had a heck of a time trying to get a plugin to install correctly awhile back. Those two have a lot of programming knowledge... best yet, they know how to translate it to English :)

Okay, so I'm compiling a list of topics that should be covered in GIMP FAQ sticky. Here's what I've got so far:

Plug-in/Script Installation (OS, Windows, Linux) + Sparky's plug-in package
Basic Editing (cropping, rotating, cloning)
UI Customization
Links to GOOD tutorials

Links to the tutorials should probably be done by subjects.

Also maybe an advanced editing one too. For me, I'm trying to learn selective area editing, tone mapping, curves, layers, and maybe doing HDR.
