You'll need to give a little more information for a better answer. To start out, are you looking for film or digital? Digital SLR or Digital point and shoot? Price range? What are you planning to do w/ it? See where this is going?

For someone who is interested in photography and believes they will keep it as a hobby or a career in the future. An entry level DSLR is a good place to start from. Can be Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony, Olympus, what every is available to you in your area. All the major manufactures have a good entry (read that as fairly inexpensive beginners) cameras.

You can't really go wrong with any of the major manufactures. If you are considering going professional in the future. Then going with Nikon, Canon, or Sony would be the choice.
