Good quality lens for Nikon d7000?

I love prime lenses... but for kids, zooms are so nice.. one second full frame as they are running toward you, and then zoom in for a close face shot as their expression changes and they make a really cute face.

Just buy the most lens you can afford, in the range you find most useful. For people (kids), some in the range from Wide-Angle to Short/Medium Telephoto would probably be optimal. (24-70, 18-105, 24-85) you wont need a long tele indoors, and it is unlikely that your child will be far enough away from you for many years, to need anything in the 200-300 range.

If you do want a nice lens that will cover a huge range.. look at the 28-300... will run less than a grand, and is very sharp. It is a good bit heavier than any of the kit lenses or consumer lenses...but not that bad. I use it on my D7000 a lot.... and love it.

The 24-70 2.8 is a wonderful lens.. but unless you are shooting professionally, have lots of spare cash, or are VERY VERY picky about image quality, you don't need it where you are right now.

The kit lens will probably do 90% of what you want... until you improve enough to KNOW what you want and need. Personally I would keep that (Unless there is a particular problem with the lens you have), and practice, practice, practice! Get to know your body.. learn the controls, use different focusing and metering techniques, get a good flash and practice with that until you are awesome with it. These will give you much better images, than just buying a new lens.....

Lens Lust is dangerous... trust me, I know! lol!
