Just the cheapo Impact set from B&H, seemed like a decent way to get started into light modifiers.

Here is one from the quick shoot I did today with my 5mo. Setup is shoot though high camera left w/SB600 1/32, and bounce low camera right w/SB600 1/64, natural fill light coming from window behind me.

The tight crop is due to the fact that she is leaning in the photo, but this was one that she really focused on the camera and not my wife standing behind me. Backdrop is just a green IKEA blanket that I had laying around.

CC always welcomed.

Beautiful image!
Do you mind linking the set you purchased? I have been looking at them on Ebay.

Impact Digital Flash Umbrella Mount Kit DFUMK - B&H Photo Video

Not pro studio quality, but it gets the job done.

I have the same umbrellas. Not going to lie, the first gust of light wind took them over and three of the ribs snapped. :grumpy:

If kept inside or weighed down, they're great for the price...just learn from my mistake lol

Yeah, I read through the reviews on B&H and that was the one thing mentioned over and over. I noticed they were not to sturdy when I was setting them up indoors. Take any umbrella out in a breeze and you will have issues. I am going to make some makeshift sandbags for when I take them outdoors.

Like I said, not pro quality. The bang for the buck factor on these allows me to overlook some shortcomings.

Congrats on the new toys.

Great shot Pink, if the bottom of the chin was there it'd be awesome. Beautiful eyes.

Just something to chew on. Catch lights generally look best in the 11:00 to 2:00 position.

You know. It is funny that you mention that. I do know this and set it up this way. Then looking at the photo I noticed the catch light was low and I thought "how could this be?" Then I recalled that she was leaning to the right and down when I took this photo (thus the need for the tight crop). Here is another shot from the same setup (with her head straight)

Get sand bags if you're going to work outdoor. It'll help unless of course it's like a 30mph wind then you shouldn't use it outside during that time

as for the pictures, they look good

Thanks for your feedback about our Impact Digital Flash Umbrella Mount Kit DFUMK kit. Much appreciated. Sandbags or a counterweight is always a good idea when using an umbrella, softbox or boom, particularly outdoors. If you have a strong feelings about the product we'd be grateful if you took the moment to post a product review, which you can do from the product info page on our site.

Regarding catchlights - look also at the direction and size of the shadow the nose casts on the cheek. it can be as informative about main light placement (and main:fill balance) as catchlights.

Love all the pics mrpink. Love the eyes especially, would you mind sharing the pp you did to get that?

I see almost 300 reviews on this product, all saying about the same thing I would... Guess 301 won't do any harm.

Simple lightroom adjustment. Brush tool, iris enhance, take the saturation down a bit if it gets too "alien eyes"-ish. Beyond that, proper lighting and exposure are key. Quick wide unsharp mask and you are done.

I think the green background helps with her eye color, that really was just by happens stance that it was the blanket I chose.
