got to shoot a baptism today

I wish the lighting was better.. or angle.. or something.. Another photographer kept stepping in front of me, so this was really the best I could do. What do ya'll think? It's not wonderful, I know. Is there any editing I could do to make this presentable?

Was it a hired photographer? Or were you the hired photographer?

If they were the hired photographer, then you stay out of *their* way and find a different angle.

If you were hired, then you politely ask them to get out of *your* way and find a different angle.

A different angle would have definitely been better. I also feel like a horizontal crop would have probably been better for this one. As well as focus on the baby, rather than the priest doing the pouring of water.

Get your flash off camera.

Or take her somewhere else inside the church, or even outside with better light altogether so as not to have to use flash.

Yeah.. I have no idea if she was hired or not (since it was a Spanish-speaking event and she did not speak English) but I was a hired photographer. I tried to be as polite as possible.

I have been at a military homecoming photographing before and had people right in front of me and there was just nothing I could do because its like a madhouse free for all and just is what it is. I'm not very loud apparently so even my "excuse me" doesn't do me much good in that situation. lol I agree though about the flash situation.. maybe at the very least get more separation (distance wise) from your subject and whatever is behind them so your shadows don't fall on the wall as they did in #2.

Yeah, I agree with you on that one. The photos aren't good, there's no doubt about it. There's really just no reshooting the event now (Since a baptism is kind of a once-in-a-lifetime event)

It was very awkward though with the language barrier. I luckily knew enough spanish to count down for them and to ask them to take one more

A $69.00 flash bracket would have taken care of the shadow behind the baby.. Sometimes, at these kind of events, a photographer doesnt have the time or a better place to make the photo.. Having the right equipment can bail you out of a jamb.. Other than the shadow, i think u did fine..

I took pictures at a baptism once and it was one of the most difficult things I have ever tried to shoot....... people constantly in my way, terrible lighting, felt impossible to get a good angle...... yeah, I definitely feel your pain!

Which is exactly why I don't shoot weddings! There's a reason wedding photographers get paid the big bucks.
