Great blue hunter

[squirl033]

Got this shot of a great blue heron catching a vole in a meadow this afternoon... first time I've actually been able to photograph a GBH catching something that wasn't aquatic. Oddly enough, the bird dropped the vole, looked at it a couple of times, and then wandered off. Perhaps its eyes were bigger than its stomach?

Just teaching the varmint who is boss. Nice catch, unusual for sure.

Great shot! I never even thought they might eat something other than fish or frogs.
