Greatest Invention

well im new to filters...thats why I need some help in this field. So please enlighten me what filter I should be using for an all purpose filter/ protection of my lens.

thanks
None, unless you are going to shoot in adverse conditions. Use the hood instead.

Filters used for 'protection' cause more problems than they solve. When they break, they often damage the front of the lens they were intended to 'protect'.

For outside shooting a Circular Polarizing (CPL) filter can be useful to somewhat the blues and greens, depending on where the Sun is relative to the lens axis. A CPL filter can also help reduce unwanted reflections if used at suitable angles to the reflected light.

I can't afford a new lens if it gets scratched!
How could it get scatched, and why would you need to buy a new lens.

LensRentals.com - Front Element Scratches

Wow, I had no idea. Great link, I'm going to have to forward that on to my father, who is responsible for embedding the idea of constant UV filter protection in my brain. Of course I'd like to read a bit more about the quality loss that might be resulting from using a UV filter.

How could you get into a car accident, how could you break your leg? Sh*t happens... and I'm a clutz. With my luck the second I take the filter off, I'll drop my camera lens down on a gravel driveway.

I'm not gods gift to grace, but in 30 years of photography I have never, repeat never, scratched the front of a lens. It's harder to do than most people realize.

There is also a Youtube video of a guy pounding on the front of his lens with a claw hammer. I wish I had kept the link.

ok so your saying use the CPL filter instead of the UV if I was too use any filter?

I thought toilet paper was the greatest invention. On the shot of the umbrella and the center support dealie...placing that thing so close to the top edge of the frame is really killing the shot for me. Otherwise, I like the pattern and everything.

thanks for ur input. I personally like the overall pattern as well. makes me dizzy.

My fav is #3, #4 looks slightly crooked. I think the umbrella would look good with some contrast. :)
