the green heron was from a kayak, it was in the shade or getting blasted by light. it jumped out into the branch to check me out one time, but only gave me a few shots, and the sun was giving very direct light on it. it was nice light, but I just didn't have time to adjust exposure.
I gave the shot of the green heron behind the branches because I thought it was very common to their curiosity but timidness. the green heron has great colors in its wings, but sometimes looks totally different with different lighting conditions.

another shot from the kayak, up a bit at this GBH in a pine tree, I was happy with the light, it lit the heron nicely exposing much detail in its feathers, with a soft fall off of lighting to the background. actually no flash was used or editing done (dodge/burn) to bring out or darken areas

this was a crop of a juvenile cardinal I have had at my feeders

my nemesis, one day I will get a good photo of you.... I setup a few perches in the water near a spot it frequents, at that time of day, and waited in my kayak behind brush for a good hour, but nothing.
