Green Ray From the Sun - Any Clue What Caused This?

I've seen the green flash twice while at sea. It happens at the instant the top of the sun disappears below the horizon. I was with a group of Marine Scientists, and they said that many tries had been made to photograph it with no success. They speculated that only a high speed camera could do it. This was in the late 60's. Has anybody done it yet?
