Hello everyone!

My name is Rob and I'm an aspiring photographer. I've come from a life-long desire to get into photography and started young at 18 with my parent's hand-me-down point-and-shoot 4MP Powershot A80. My father always developed his own film and shot with a honkin' Nikon that he keeps around for nostalgia. He'd never let me touch it for obvious reasons and now, at age 25, I've finally picked up my very own Canon EOS 600D

Up until now I've been using cell phones, which have been getting better and better over the years, to snap quick photos wherever I go. I've been infintely proud of the shots I've taken with my Lumia 920 and 925 and considered upgrading to the 1020 when it dawned on me that a T3i would cost me less than a 1020. While the megapixel count would have been nice, I knew I'd have MUCH more control over my shots with the T3i than I ever would with the Lumia.

What brought me to this point was when I was watching Wistia videos online. I've been building a small video studio in my apartment for the fun of it and have since gotten lighting equipment and backdrops together. I also picked up a shotgun mic and boom pole for better audio and will eventually pick up a pre-amp and equalizer. I've always wanted to take videography and photography seriously, but it wasn't until I watched the episode they did about the 5D that I was reminded that DSLRs are where it's at, NOT cellphones.

I saw that my local BestBuy had them in stock so I ran to pick one up. I bought one along with a bag and a memory card (I already had a 64GB Class 10 Sandisk but I figured I can pop the 8GB card in my HD camcorder I've started using for B roll footage) and skampered on home to play.

In the last day of ownership I've taken a lot of amateur photos and played a little with RAW, though not as much as I'd like due to work. I was looking for a community I can throw questions at and eventually contribute with, and that's what landed me here.

I felt like my Lumia phones gave me a lot of control, but I realize just how either very little I really gleened from photography before or how much more there is to DSLR photography than I ever thought possible. I look forward to learning here and growing as a photographer!

Welcome to both of you!

Welcome to the site.

Welcome, fellow desert rat! Isn't the weather just great this time of year? :)

While the Lumia 1020 does have a higher resolution than the T3i, its image quality almost certainly is lower. The sensor size has a much bigger effect on image quality than the number of pixels, and the T3i's sensor is larger than the Lumia's sensor. You'll find that the T3i has a better dynamic range (more able to capture high contrast scenes) and less noise than any camera phone out there. And if you don't need any of the extra features the Lumia provides (like a phone), I'll say you made a good choice.

Welcome to the forum. As Christop mentioned the much larger sensors and of course much better lenses you can get for a DSLR will give you a huge step up in image quality from any camera phone ever made. If we can answer any questions for you feel free to ask.

Welcome to the forum, may your wallet rest in peace.
