Looking to get a grip for my 20D and was wondering how they charge? Do you charge battery's and put them inside the grip or is the grip one whole unit?
Thanks.

Charge them and put them in. Go to the gear page in my sig and see a photo of it.

Yes, the grip opens up and you can slide in one or two batteries (same batteries as that the camera uses). The grip should also come with a cartridge that allows you to use six AA batteries, but they don't last as long as the regular batteries.

Your gear in amazing.

I'll second that. You've got a lot of nice stuff!
Thanks. I like it too (and I'm pretty sure it likes me back, and I'm absolutely SURE the sales people like me! LOL!). In any case, it gets me by pretty well for most of the stuff I want to shoot. Sure would like to get a 500mm prime though...

What on earth is the 5D (on Buckster's gear page) metering at ISO6400, 1/8000, f/5.6, in P mode? The lightbox?
You're probably right, but I dunno. It's a stock photo I got somewhere. meh.

Bucky, Yea, DIY Rocks. Love the Gimbal Head. Good Job.

I DIY too much stuff in my hobbies but when I score, I score well. I fail often. Now to my question. Do you fail well?

Mick

Spectacularly! I just keep in mind what Edison said, to the effect of, "I didn't fail a thousand times - I found a thousand ways not to do it!" ;)

4 tips with battery grips:

1) Sometimes you'll need to jiggle the grip and remove and reattach it to get the contacts in the grip to line up perfectly with the contacts in the camera body. Generally once the contacts have a good lock onto each other you won't have to reseat the grip again - but the first time might require this

2) There is a little battery door holding compartment on most grips - use it to keep hold of your battery door when you remove it to attach the grip

3) Don't overtighten the grips locking wheel/screw - if you do the grip can become stuck onto your camera body.

4) Always have at least one spare battery not in the battery grip. This is important because often the power level readout on the grip can drop very suddenly from half power to almost no power. Match that with the fact that with two batteries inside you won't be recharging after every trip out and its very easy to suddenly run out of power. So a spare battery outside the grip means you've always one to hand to use at the time instead of having to turn around and head home to recharge.
