has anyone shot night clubs and bar?

I am having a hard time getting the ambient lighting in the back ground. i want something more like this...

i been playing with the setting..but i want a picture that also show the back lighting ( the blue part on the picture ) also all my picture that i took showed only the subject but no background lighting. Any suggestion...i have not done much night life photography. so im trying to get some practice
