Have you ever had a malfuntion?

Today, I was volunteering at the American Heart Association. My 70D was acting weird. On the LCD screen said manual focus, but the lens was switched to auto focus. It scared the heck out of me. I thought my dslr was broken. I turned it off and pull the battery out. Put the battery back in, turned on the switch, same problem. I kept getting blurry shots. It took me a while to trouble-shoot. I detached the lens and reattached to the body, and the auto focus was working. I was so worried that I could not able to take pictures.

Have you ever had a malfunction on your dslr?

most of my malfunctions involved women, not a camera.
so far, all of my DSLR's have a better performance track record than I do.

Barring user error the only one I've encountered and can repeat is:

When using a battery grip on a Canon camera when the batteries are nearly fully drained and using a lens with IS/OS. What happens is that the camera goes to take the shot, flips the mirror and opens the shutters and then when it activates the sensor it dies. Total lock up and nothing will work. The only way to get it to re-set is to turn the camera off and remove the batteries (turning it off is not enough).

You can the re-insert the same batteries and turn the camera on, it should flick the mirror down and reset to normal.

What I suspect happens is that the camera budgets its power for the shot, but when the IS/OS is running and draining power that combined with the rest of the normal functions renders the camera without enough charge to function; ergo it runs out and goes into lockdown with no power left to complete its actions.

As said this only happens when the batteries in the grip are fully drained; so when it hits its a good (if unnerving the first time) reminder to change them over for fresh ones/recharge them.
