Having trouble softening light.

yuh huh, I have 2 SB-600's and use my D70 from time to time instead of my 700 because the 70 can sync at 1/500th at full power, only the D40/50/70 and D1 can do that.

Don't forget FP High speed sync. Your D700 and SB-600s can go to 1/8000th, if you so want/need them to.

You can do that through an umbrella too... been there and done that... lots of fun, and becuase the umbrellas are so close as to be JUST out of the frame of a closeup, make sure that the model doesn't suffer from claustrophobia... LOL... but man, you have NOT seen a softer more diffused light than under those circumstances!
