Having trouble understanding On camera light metering

With an EVF, we can see exposure and WB in real time. We don't have to guess or chimp. Figured by now that was common knowledge with Sony's.

Looking at an EVF is just pre-chimping -- it's no less error prone than post-chimping. And throwing salt into the wound, you're pre-chimping the JPEG from that Sony Bionz processor. So you're chimping Sony JPEGs when the camera has a perfectly usable exposure meter?!!

How could you argue that? Its basically full proof. What you see is what you get with an EVF. As far as ease of use, convenience and speed it's a huge plus. Oh and you can use the light meter as well as its right there in the viewfinder. Generally I'll get close with it but might adjust simply based on what I see through the eye piece.

To the OP: it sounds to me like you are shooting in a lot of situations where you have brightly lit or major amounts of dark areas in your photo, and that's where you will want to recognise it and think about dialing in some EC. I aslso find CWA produces decent results in most conditions.

If the situation allows I'll use the zone method for determining exposure by spot metering on the lightest and darkest parts of the scene to check the dynamic range and then set where I want the lightest part to be. Occasionally I'll use a mid tone if the dynamic range is ok.
