Head-Shoots w/an Artistic Flair...

OK by now most of you have seen some of my work... if not just look at a few of my threads... My images are over-processed... yes it's not everyone's taste... and no I will not stop... but I felt that I just had to write this first... My clients seem to love the different look it gives so until they stop then I guess I will keep doing this...
Let's chalk my work up to Artistic-Interpretation ...


Now this shoot is for an MUA (Jaime) that lives in my area... she gets a nice clean head-shot ... I get something a little more funky...

All images were shot using LED lights instead of strobes... (still learning them).... Shot w/Hassy H1 & IQ140 w/ 4/120 lens....

Are you then simply posting to get pats on the back? Or spamming? I am serious. If you do not care to have a critique, or won't consider then what's the point? Personally I agree with your assumption about how most here will view your work.

Found the forum ... And decided to participate here... I do listen to critics ... The site I used to post for feed back closed down last month ... After 10 years... So I decided to see if this one would work... But wanted to state ovious upfront... So that actual critics can be posted...

interesting, those are my least favorite out of the bunch. But they both had major potential.

for me, I didnt like the head chop in #1, and #4 was just a little to twisty headed and not enough sexily arched. #4 was processed well though.
I dont know how you are envisioning #2 and #3, and its definitely not my style, so I have limited input as to what would improve them while staying within the constraints of this "style". I just like them.

I find #2, the blue shot with the fright wig, has her riding very low in the frame. All that top space looks very poor to me...the excessive top space, her chin dragging the entire frame down...not sure if that's supposed to be some kind of disregarding of the ideals of good composition or what, but it looks, well, bad. No other way to say it...it doesn't work except perhaps unless the intent was to be a rule-flouting exercise. That said, these do have a very definite against the grain look to them, in multiple ways. For people who want a different look, these definitely do set themselves apart from most photographs. I think today, that is something many people are seeking: photos that look outside the box, photos that separate themselves in one way or another. The world today is smply flooded with pics....cell phone pics, d-slr images, Instagram images, vines, longer video clips,animated .GIFs, pictures,picture,pictures,pictures...pictures are frickin' everywhere today...so,doing something, anything, to make some pictures that stand out is probably more important today than it ever has been.

Does liking a "different look" hold value over time? Will they continue to like this same "different look" next year, or will you give them something different next year? Almost everyone will marvel at a "different look" once or twice, but what do they really want?

You said the MUA gets "a nice clean head shot", which apparently serves her needs better than "funky", so why doesn't Jaime want your "funky" shots?

For me #1 and #3 give me something I would think an MUA would like to have. #2 is pulling my eye to the shoulder. #4 the arm position is unusual for that framing with the emphasis on the back, and a fingertip poking up. Overall sounds like a good deal to have a chance to try something different.

pixmedic - I agree that why I posed these images... wanted to see what I did wrong... #4 she is just double jointed and did that and made my jaw drop...

Derrel - again agree I will try to crop it... something just was not right... on that shot that will help see if I can pull something out of it... My processing style is carried over from my IR stuff... just tried to do it one day and its not bad... and I have been perplexed why clients want the ones you don't like that I played with... Most of my stuff is a modified High-Key... but lately people want the trashy love novel looks... go figure...

Designer - you too are right it's a fad... just ride it while it's here... the MUA actually likes the over processed stuff too... it's just weird...

Dave442 - Yes it's a chance to just play and be way left field... thanks for the finger I noticed it but forgot to fix that....

I do agree with what most of you are saying... I just wanted confirmation for what I was thinking... Thank you guys for the constructive critic's....

I think the first one is interesting; with the second one I'd think about the use of space (the model is so low in the frame). In the third and fourth I think the expression and the position in 4 are each rather odd, and the hair needed to be combed/arranged - even for a tousled look I think it would have helped to notice how the hair was laying before shooting the pictures.

I like the first and last one for some reason. I think she looks a bit over processed in the second and uncomfortable in the fourth. But overall- Good job.

On the first the only thing that buggs me is her teeth are showing through her lips. I find that very distracting. Otherwise I like it.

2 is my favorite of the lot, it's got a great expression but I don't like the framing. It would have been better in portrait orientation IMO

3 and 4 are both good but I really like the pose in 4.

On the whole I like them and I'm ok with the overprocessing too.
