Hectic Household & Maternity

I am looking for help with ideas for a shoot. A client wants pictures for a maternity announcement. She wants something unique and funny. We are thinking of barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen with curlers, an ironing board, kids throwing things and general havoc. She has four kids already and they are not easy to direct so this may be difficult. Lighting could also be a challenge because I only use four speedlights and will need a very small aperture to get the DOF I will need. I would appreciate any suggestions you may have from setup to PP. Thanks. I will post the pictures next week.

I would have them all lazing on one single couch - that way who cares what carnage goes on.

Ok, here it is. I made one very clear mistake that I did not see on the camera at the time. There are some pretty harsh shadows from an extra flash I set up at the last minute. I thought it was bouncing off the ceiling but obviously not. I had two other flashes set up as well. One with an umbrella and one with a softbox. I needed the third because I was shooting at f14 to get everyone in focus. 1/160 sec and ISO 640.

Prego spaghetti sauce, bun in the oven, barefoot, crazy household. Then it went straight onto Facebook and earned her hundreds of likes.

I think you did pretty well; no, the shadows aren't ideal, but given the confines in which you were working, I think it turned out just fine. Was the grey colour pallet intentional or just what everyone was wearing?

No, they were wearing some bright colors. I tuned them down in post. Maybe too much. Here is the original.

I went to flickr to take a look at the larger version. I see the shadows but, in my opinion, for the shot you got, they aren't that much of a problem.
There's so much going on there and I think it's a great shot!
I like the little girl the best, well...I like all

I always desaturate things, especially red but I think that you tone the colors down too much. It should be chaos, those colors should add the chaotic feel, turning them down that much doesn't do any good in this case. Of course jmho.

I was back and forth on the colours too; I agree that bright colours would add to the general confusion, but the drab pallet imparts sort of a somber mood... not sure which would work better.

I think it would be more dramatic if you could see how pregnant the mother is.

Maybe some type of profile shot of her standing up and cleaning dishes or something, and of course add in the hubby and kids.

There is no belly yet. This was her way of announcing that she is pregnant. Kids just found out that day.

I wonder then if near the end of the pregnancy, you could capture such a pic just for the fun of it. Or better yet, retake that same photo, but this time, mom is holding the new born while doing house work
