I have only recently learnt this technique. I used to just use the sports setting on the camera, the problem was the cars always looked stationary.
I bought a very good book called Motorsport Photography by Tony Pleavin and applied some of the techniques shown in the book.

I was not sure what looked better at first, but I love the moving shots now.
