help before purchase

hey everyone,

i'm just ready to order a vivitar 285HV for my canon 400D, i've been determined to buy it for a while now but before i do-

i would like to check out the cheapest flash with e-ttl auto settings and that has manual settings on it aswell

i have a 420ex but it doesn't have manual controls and i really want them, but the vivitar doesn't have e-ttl so that could be a let down in certain situations.

so, any ideas on the best flashes with manual controls and possibly e-ttl (maybe even older canon flashes...?)
