I've never had this happen before. Last imported 400+ just a couple days ago from same SD card. Is this typical behavior of a damaged card?

If you've removed all your photos, you might try re-formatting the card.

What Designer said is going to be your best bet. Pop it in your computer and look at the total capacity available. It should be a little less than 8g but nothing substantially less than that. If it is, it's unlikely you'll be able to re-claim that space, just get a new card. Otherwise you risk losing images you store on it in the future. However, if the space is there and it's just a matter of re-allocating it, you should be OK.

If none of that works, go into window's disk utility and repartition.

Yep. You need to re-format the card in the camera after each upload so the FAT (File Allocation Table) gets updated.

Unless re-formatted your card's FAT keeps the memory locations those 400 photos occupy on the card unavailable.
When you upload, all of the image file data remains on the card. Updating the FAT by re-formatting allows overwriting new image files to those already used memory locations.

Thank you for that information. I will try to reformat my card tonight

I have had issues where "one camera model" would not/could not re-format cards that had images still on them from a DIFFERENT camera model...not sure why...but I had that happen this very week.
