Im planning to purchase a prime lens.. though i do not know what to get.
I have a D40 camera as a beginner's dslr.

What is the best prime lens?
50mm 1.8?
50mm 1.4?
35mm 1.8?
Or any suggestions?

Thanks a lot

35mm f/1.8 would be my suggestion on a D40. It would be much easier to use indoors than a 50mm.

If money is an issue then the 35mm AF-S f1.8 I have it and it is a great lens for how cheap it is.

If not then go for the 50mm f/1.4 if you are okay with that focal range (Use your kit lens to see what each would look like)

Yes, the difference is 8 stops of light.

Yes there is a big difference.

The 35mm AF-S F/1.8 is much faster which means it will perform better in lower light. It will also auto focus on your D40.

The 18-35 lens is an older lens and will not auto focus with your D40. There is no reason you would want that lens over the kit lens that comes with the D40.

I need a lens for indoor studio photography and bright outdoor portraits.
So should i get 35mm 1.8 lens?
