help me out please. D80 and lens issue.

i am a little confused, can you guys help me out?i am new to DSLR and i put my new Nikkor 50mm F/1.8 lens on. if i don't turn the lock ring to F/22 on the lens, i get an "f EE" error. the manual says if i get this error then i have to set the lens at the highest arperture setting. this confuses me because on the lens i can unlock the ring and select an F-stop all the way down to 1.8...but if i do, the camera just does not work. what am i doing wrong?

you need to set the aperture from the camera body not the lens so when you have the lens set at f22 the camera and you through the camera can control the aperture.

I have that camera body and lens. Install the lens and set the aperture to the highest, f22. Lock that in place so it won't move. you now control the aperture with the sub command dial or the one your right index finger controls and the shutter speed is controled with the main command dial or the one your right thumb touches.
