HELP!! photo/color correcting for newspaper photos

i'm part of the art department for a newspaper and our photo editor just left. he hasn't gotten around to replacing her and put me in charge... that was 5 months ago.

i'm not a photo editor and i know nothing about "calibrating" it for newspapers.

can someone give me a quick and basic tutorial?

i've used levels and curves. i get different results everytime. i dont' understand!!
