Help Please!!!!!

Hey guys, I joined this site because I want to learn more about pohotography, because my wife is starting her bachlors program this fall, and I want to help her as much as possible. Last year I bought her a Nikon D3000 for her birthday, and she has not gone one day without it. I know NOTHING about photography, and I just wanted oppions on what basic equipment she needs to really get her on the right path.

As much time as she's now spent with it, she probably knows a lot more about what she needs/wants than we will, based on what she shoots and what she wants to shoot. Have you simply asked her?

Okay, so she has the camera but what lenses does she have? Does she have a flash yet (not the pop-up one on the camera)?

A 50mm prime lens and a speedlight are fairly generic starting points but I agree w/ Buck that you really should ask her what she thinks the next step is in her photography journey.

This reminds me of my birthday/Christmas list. I gave my list to my wife so she could buy me a birthday gift. She goes to the store and asks for a B+W 6 stop ND 77mm. They don't have one (big surprise there). So they say "Well, if he wants that, then he'll REALLY love this Genus fader that goes from 2-11 stops for the same price!! DEAL!

False. I get it and see that it actually only varies by about 6 stops and reviews say it gets soft at long focal ranges and the effect is uneven across the frame, so I take it back and will get the B+W 6 stop ND 77mm.

The point is, I know what I want, and what I don't want. Your wife probably does too.
