Help with a school project

Hey guys. One of the various photos i am required to take is a portrait of someone. not a standard portrait, just any photo with a person as a subject somewhere in the image. i have this one here, C&C please =D. any other advice/ideas on portraits are very welcome.

I think you lost too much detail due to having the sun right next to her in the shot. I like the lens flare but the photo being blown out kind of kills it. Maybe try something like this with her blocking the sun out with her body and using a fill flash to light this side of her so you still get that nice glow around the shoulders and hair an stuff with the details. I don't know what your settings were either but try your f/stop up around f/11 - f/22 depending on what your lens will give you. Try a few shots with different f/stops and shutter speeds, write them down like (#1 f/11 @ 1/1000) (#2 f/22 @ 1/1000) an so on an so forth and see what you get and what settings work out best for what you are going for. Ah I'm rambling again. Just my 2 cents. Best of luck with your project!

Love the pose, the angle is wonderful... the background is awesome... but that grain is not doing a thing for your image. Neither is the sun. If you tried this image again, why not stand on the other side and catch her in silhouette? Then throw the image in lightroom and reduce whatever noise you're left with, along with adding any additional blacks that are needed.

If that solution isn't palatable for you, I'd suggest trying the image at a different time of day so the sun isn't behind her.
