I would want a reeeaaaaaly long lens for this shot. :icon_eek:

It's a fallacy that they will spray you if you get close. Skunks avoid spraying unless absolutely necessary. If you threaten it or back them into a corner they will spray. Its last resort for them if running away doesn't work. They always give warning first . If they turn your back on you and lift tail just walk away. I sometimes get a family of them through my backyard and they just tend to ignore me.

I had landscape in mind and was walking around with a Nikon AF-P 18-55mm VR kit lens I picked up refurbished after my sigma 17-50mm f.2,8 decided to jump out of my camera bag my fault for not paying attention the bag was not zipped did some bouncing off rocks before in went in the saltwater drink the lens hood landed on a rock when it flew off.. I was not going for a 300 dollar or more lens again but guess what, the kit lens excellent is every bit as sharp as the sigma was IMO has better contrast and color and its fast and totally silent to focus a diamond in the rough I think. So I used the 55mm end but moved in as close as I can then cropped the rest. Its true what Brent said that skunks will only spray as a last resort so if you let them see you and don't startle them you should be fine but yeah long lenses is a safer better.

Raised them as pets when I was a teenager. At $300 a kit (descented) it provided some spending money. They are actually quite clean, and can be housebroke. As I remember they weren't overly affectionate animals. The male especially had needle sharp teeth and would bite if provoked.

My sister had two of them as pets and the scent glands where removed when they where young. The where raised around cats and got along well. I once went to get a piece of lint or something off the nose of the skunk and it bit me freaking hard finger bleeding like heck umm it hurts like hell. I heard the sugar gliders people keeps as pet that if they bit its a very nasty one.forget that,I keep my kitty cat

If someone removed my sacks, I'd bite too

Had to google Sugar Gliders. Damn they are cute.

But what if a half blind rabid squirrel attacked at just that moment and the skunk defended himself and you got caught in the cross fire? could happen.... :allteeth::allteeth::allteeth: Oh, it would also make for an amazing photo!

Didn't you get them removed as part of your wedding ceremony?

I suspect like the rest of us he still encounters a phenomenon known as phantom limb syndrome. :biggrin-93:
