Hi, need help with ISO

Alright, so im very new to photography.
and i was just wondering, what exactly ISO is.
I understand aperature, and shutter speed,and white balance.
other then that...
what are some basic things i should know?

ISO is how sensitive your sensor is to light. The darker the area in which you are shooting the higher the ISO setting must be to get a proper exposure.

The ISO is the measure of sensitivity of the image sensor to the amount of light present. The higher the ISO, the more sensitive the image sensor and therefore the lighter the image. i.e. with high ISO you can capture images in low-light situations.

why would you need a high iso in low light? if your on a tripod and its a static subject just use the lowest iso and a longer shutter

Hi, I'm new too. I read a great tutorial on light from Dominantly. It really helped me out. I think the best tip I've gotten is to check the camera's histogram to see if the photo is properly exposed. http://www.thephotoforum.com/forum/members/dominantly.html
