hi this photo confuses me  just how the rock lookes like its been cut and pasted in the image... i took many shots to get this but itsjust not right.
i wanted to catch the wave as it hit the rock and splashed up any ideas on how to get the shot next time?

Your WB is way off. Also it is hard to judge how big that rock is so it is very hard to give advice.

I wouldve never guessed that there were waves in that pic...it kinda looks like a pic I would expect to see of the moon maybe?
dunno....but def not what you described.

Hmmmm.....I thought this was shot was anything but what you described. I thought it was a rock in a sandbox, or a rock with some random fog around it. Play around with the WB, maybe stand in a different spot to get a different angle, and not zoom in so much?

thanks all i will deff remember about the WB next time and zoom out abit, i might have to jump the fence at the beach to get the shot i'm after, should i lower the shutter speed i'm pretty sure this photo was taken at 15".
i do agree if i didnt know where this photo was taken i would be sitting there wondering what it is,maby this is why i like it.

What you want is not gonna happen with what you did.

If you want a stop action shot of the wave crashing on the rock, you will need to increase your shutter speed significantly.

yea figured that but also wanted a "dreamy' effect with the water... suppose i cant have the best of both worlds.

i'll learn through time still very new at DSLR's its all trial and error.

next time i get a chance i might go down at sunset i think i'll get a nice effect

Maybe you can. I've never tried it with water, but if you shoot a ling exposure like you did and hit the wave with a fill flash as soon as it hits the flash will freexe the wave on impact and the ambient light will record the movement.

I think it might be a little tricky with water but I think the experiment might be fun even if it doesn't work out exactly the way you want.
