High Contrast Ricoh film Compacts

Possibly stupid question. Ive noticed 99.9% of sample photos from Ricoh film compacts (GR1, GR1s, R1) are extremely high in contrast. Is there a specific reason for this?

Looking at a print from neg, or looking at a digitalized image (of neg or print) posted on the web ?
The cameras did have a pretty good lens ... but I do think that the images you are seeing are more about the film used, printing, and/or digital scanning and processing.
